World War II started on September, 1939, with the German Invasion of Poland and subsequent declarations of war on Germany by most of the countries in the British Empire and Commonwealth, and by France.
The Germans had organised the seaborne invasion of Britain (Operation Sealion) which depended on the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) having control over the skies. Between the 10 July to 31 October 1940 the Royal Airforce (RAF) defeated the German Luftwaffe in an action referred to as ‘The Battle of Britain’ and the invasion was cancelled.
