Miniature Writhern hilt sword letter opener — Royal Armouries collection
This letter opener that is part of the Royal Armouries mini replica collection, is a total of cm in length and is a magnificently accurate mini replica of the ‘Writhen’ Hilt sword from the Collection here at the Royal Armouries in Leeds.
This hand-and-a-half sword is of German origin, dated circa 1480. It features a gilt-bronze pommel and cross-guard which appears as three twisted rods. The original wooden grip has been well preserved, a rarity for a medieval sword, and is carved to resemble a writhen stave bearing a gilt-bronze collar at its centre.
