Traditional mail techniques have been used to produce this necklace despite it not following a particular mail pattern. Mail, meaning ‘chain’, is a historic style of armour that dates back to the Romans and Etruscans. It was made by a master craftsman and his apprentices by assembling hundreds of tiny mental rings into wearable garments for all over the body. The rings were usually made from steel or iron which was fed through small holes at hot temperatures until the metal took on wire form. As you can imagine, the production of mail can be a highly time consuming process, even today with modern tools.
